Mt Ruapehu and its climatic blanket is a constantly dramatic and ever changing backdrop to The Chateau, one of New Zealand's oldest and most famous tourist hotels. I readily recall being over-awed by the hotel some 60 years ago (in 1944), and to the best of my knowledge it had been standing for some time even then. It has, of course, had more than one major renovation since then.
